Franco: He owes them a lot. They scrimped and saved for years to get the money together to pay for his fees and expenses.
    To scrimp and save
Miranda: Did you see the graduation photo in our local newspaper?
Franco: You mean the one with Kevin Fong in it? He was the brightest student in our class.
Miranda: Yes. Didn't he look great in his PhD robes and hat?
Franco: He certainly did. His parents must be very proud of him.
Miranda: They are. He's the first one from his family to go to university and now he's Dr Fong!
Franco: He owes them a lot. They scrimped and saved for years to get the money together to pay for his fees and expenses.
Miranda: Well he's obviously going to have a very successful career, which means he will be able to do his best for them.
蜜兰德说﹕Didn't he look great in his PhD robes and hat? 按robe是可数名词(countable noun),指「袍」,但显示官职、地位等的礼袍,即使只是一袭,一般也会用复数形式,例如﹕The Pope came onto the platform in his ceremonial robes(教皇身穿礼袍,走上讲台)。
佛朗哥说﹕His parents must be very proud of him。 She is proud of her son's achievements(她以儿子的成就为荣)一语,可改写为She takes pride in her son's achievements / She prides herself on her son's achievements。留意to be proud of something / someone、to take pride in something / someone和to pride oneself on something / someone三个说法,所用介系词都不同。
佛朗哥说﹕They scrimped and saved for years。Scrimp指长期一分一文的把钱节省下来,常和save这动词连用,例如﹕I have to scrimp and save to make both ends meet(我得省吃俭用,才可以勉强应付开支)。
